An Equine Assisted Psychological session will provide you with all the same experiences as you can get in a traditional therapy setting but with loads more! In addition to having a safe, supportive environment to share your frustrations, fears, worries or concerns, you will have a chance to build skills, confidence and knowledge about horses.
If you're anxious, you will be able to learn skills for managing anxiety and have an opportunity to practice them in the moment. If you're struggling with depressed mood, you will feel the difference a session in the outdoors, with animals, immediately makes to your mood.
For people wanting help with experiences of trauma (including PTSD and childhood trauma), you will have a quiet, safe and respectful environment to gently explore the impact this has had on your life and then develop skills to work through and resolve it. The big difference for all of these concerns, it that the conversation feels gentler and more natural because you will be playing (and learning) with your equine friends at the same time.
During the session you will learn about horse behaviour, how they communicate, and how they experience the world. You will also get to brush, halter, and lead a horse (all at your own pace). At the same time, you will learn more about human behaviour, and your needs for safety and connection.
Equine Assisted Therapy go for 50 minutes. They are semi-structured, meaning there may be an activity or topic planned for the day. However, they are guided by you and your needs, and people's needs can change rapidly. Therefore, they are completely flexible and will be adjusted to meet whatever YOU need that day.
You will learn about horse behaviour and their incredible way of displaying their emotions in so many different ways. You'll spend time observing herd behaviour recognising horses aren't so different from us.
During Equine Assisted Therapy you will learn to halter a horse, brush, lead a horse and spending valuable 1 on 1 time connecting with the horses in a safe environment. You can pogress at your own pace, there are no time pressures here or expectations. You will learn in your own time. Enjoying the horses in the moment.
Being present in the moment is one of the most integral parts of mental wellness and we promote you taking the time to breathe in the fresh air, the smell of the horses all in a relaxing supportive space.
